Throwback Thursday: Vintage ComicCon

This Upcoming Saturday Trisha Trixie will be at miniCon Comic Con here in Des Moines Iowa. This made me wonder if I could find any images to share with you today of some older ComicCons and what they were like. The ComicCon Planners are encouraging cosplay so I thought I would start there and see where it evolves.

Here are some fun images I think you might fall off your seat in laughter about. The first one is truly funny!

These are some I found from Vintage Everyday from a 1980 ComicCon…

(Totally love the wallpaper btw)

Chad Spilkers dad perhaps? LOL

and of course, gotta have the sexy on

Some dress in Vintage Looking costumes

Vintage Trekkies

This Con looks more like an Old persons con to me, but hey at least they are there to support

Types of retro things you used to find at cons (these are all hoarded by the collectors now I think) 🙂

Retro or Vintage comics nowadays are RARE and very hard to find. If you do find any they are worth a pretty penny but as I was talking to a friend she said the Comic shop wanted her to go have them certified before he would buy them.

If you are looking for that special comic though, ComicCons are the pace to go because lots of vendors bring those specialty items to the shows.

and…

Here is Dale Messick from Brenda Starr at a Comic Con I thought you all might like

Dale Messick

I hope you enjoyed this walk down memory lane with me on the ComicCon side of things. Remember if you dress Cosplay this weekend you get in FREE!

Stop by my booth, say hi, get a free signed MEME card from me

Hope to see you there! Can’t wait!

Until next time,

Mad Men Monday: Tribute to Mom in a Different World

I always have to smirk at the thing that happen on the show, most especially things mother’s say, how they act and how the children are as well. It was such a  different time then.

This little funny from “The Daily Beast” show Betty Draper in her true glory

Betty Draper (Mad Men)

Some mothers yell when their kids won’t eat their vegetables. Mad Men’s Betty Draper goes postal. From stuffing sweet potatoes in her daughter’s mouth to slapping her when she cuts her own hair, it’s easy to wonder why this “perfect” ’60s housewife had children in the first place

The new Mother in Law in Betty’s life is one of those irritating types. I have friends who have grandmothers such as this and we hated it when they had to visit or watch us. They were so mean

Then there is Joan’s Mom. Half the time she is a great help and the other half (or more than) she meddles and irritates Joan to no end. Isn’t that how mom’s are sometimes though?

Joan however as a new mom is trying hard to keep it all together, be back int eh workforce and raise her son up right with right morals and values by standing up for what she believes in early on.

Megan’s mom is seemingly delightful to everyone else, but Megan. I know a few mom’s of this nature

Megan on the other hand, is stuck in the limbo land of I am a hottie, I am a wife, or wait this weekend I have to be a mom. I have been there. Not an easy task

Many people forget Peggy as a part of the “mother” group. She did have a baby and she technically IS a mom. She does not see her child anymore and gave him up for adoption. Though some may not agree with her, I favor her decision to do what was right for her.

What I find intriguingly interesting was then when I did a search for Mad Men Mom, there was one missing from the mix. Trudy Campbell. I would have thought Peggy would have been, but no, nowhere to be found is Trudy. Trudy is solid and sturdy. She stands up for herself against Pete who is lame beyond all compare.  She has done well in standing up for her household and her values.

When thinking of Mother’s Day coming up, remember how it used to be and how it is now. The moms have changed and the kids too. No more are the days of shoes coming off and being used as a punishing instrument or wooden spoons or paddles. Mom’s used to let their kids out for hours and not care or worry where there were. Kids used to play with dry cleaning bags to anything they could find and the mom’s of the world did NOT think to worry.

I mention the kids because there is a song from Bucky Covington that makes me think about how different things were then from now. We used to drink out of  a hose, we used to run in the streets, and eheven mentions how mothers used to smoke and drink, and you know what, we survived…

Saturday (Evening) Special-Vintage Sewing Books

I love Vintage sewing books such as these. There not only is something wonderful to me about the smell of old books, but looking at these brings backs moment of when my Grandma Hunter was trying so hard to teach me the basics. I also love the style of these books and how they teach us. There is no fancy DVD or CD with some tutorial on it. All they had was words. Words and images in and on a book to tell us everything we needed to know about how to sew. I got one of the books at a Thrift store and the other one I happened upon when I was at Domestica in East Village in Des Moines.

If you get a chance to grab one of these types books, do yourself a favor and get it. It is well worth it and you won’t regret it.

Now, I am going off to my rocking chair and ottoman and gonna put my feet up and devour into these tonight and get off this new version of a Idiot box- the computer. 🙂

Wednesday What Not: the skinny on bullying

 Bullying now and then.

What is the difference?  Have you ever stopped to wonder why we as are so much harsher on each other than ever before.  How the older generation doesn’t understand bullying?  I’ve heard my mother as well as others say, “Everyone gets picked on in school.”  Bullying goes further than what they know.

Bullying Defined

So what is bullying?  I found a great site that provides information regarding bullying from stopbullying.gov I recommend that you check out this site for information on how to deal with bullying.

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:

  • An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
  • Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.

Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

Overtime, bullying can cause serious emotional problems.

The Vintage Female Image

My mother’s childhood were filled with several types of beautiful women like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.  It was acceptable for women to have all shapes of bodies and they were all beautiful.

Pepsi Cola Ads, 1950s (2)                   1950smodels

Not only do these women have different shapes and sizes, but they are doing something; laughing with their girlfriends, gardening and being ogled by a child.  The event in life was more valued than the look.  Don’t get me wrong, these women were beautiful.  However, women of the 50s were valued for their abilities; cooking, cleaning, gardening, crafting, socializing and many other abilities.  What are women valued for today?

The Modern Female Image

What are our young ladies valued for today?  Sex, drugs or money?  I’m not really sure what we are teaching them.  However, these images can only hurt them.

What are we valuing here?  I’m not really sure.  I guess this is why I hold on to the values of the 50s.  I can never be one of these girls.  My body wasn’t built this way.  I don’t want sunken eyes or to appear soulless.

It took me years to realize that I would never be a size 2.  That it was okay to be myself.  That there are things worth valuing in myself and other women, beyond looks.   Help your friends, daughters, neighbors and all girls find their worth!

At Trisha Trixie Designs we want girls to find their inner talents.  To showcase them with their own beauty.  With that, I’ll will leave you with pictures of some real women.  You are all beautiful!

Throwback Thursday: Back to Domestic Bliss

tumblr_mj9t91iMBR1r9qhhio1_500 SEP020660

Woman’s fulfillment and keeping her man happy, having a clean home and raising good children has been outdated until recently again. It seems everywhere I turn I am finding more and more retro minded women wanting to have this “Domestic Bliss” back in their lives. The women who once wanted it all now want to go back to simpler times and I am one of them.

Old style cooking, Martha Stewart and other cooking shows began to gain popularity once again. The love for the kitchen and cooking for your man exuded once again. Retro hairstyles, makeup, tools , trends, all of it started trending again.

The Retro Woman has the look of perfection even when it is not.

Trisha Trixie Vintage Edit

I tend to be more of 1930s,40’s, 50s kind of gal but I am also a Mad Men lover and love the 60s even as wrought with confusion as it was. I love the fashion the style and the mix between the women and their roles in life and how they emulated themselves.

I want Throwback Thursday to be a walk, skip and a jump down memory lane. I want to showcase the images, cards, even the silliness of things like how were excited over getting a vacuum for a birthday gift!

Saturday Morning Special: Weekends

What is your Saturday like?

Is it relaxing, putting your foot up on the ottoman, drinking a beer, watching TV, doing nothing?

Is it running errands you didn’t get to do all week?

Is that the day that everything in the house can finally get done?

For me I try not to make it a cleaning day but sometimes that happens. It is the only day me and my man get to enjoy a full day as a “Weekend Day” as he calls it. Friday starts the weekend, but because he has to work, Friday doesn’t count. Sunday only goes so far and you have to behave in the night time because the next day is a “School Day ” or “Work Day” mentality he says. So Saturday is the only REALLY Weekend Day unless it is a Holiday and he gets an extra day off.

I know many of you are planning this weekend to bake and cook and color eggs.

Some are getting ready to show their favorite Easter Dress or New Easter Dress at church this Sunday.

Some are not celebrating this holiday for one reason or another and it is just a normal weekend like any other.

If you are looking for a nice Vintage Recipe that Takes the Cake (Pun full and well intended) Here is a nice Vintage Recipe I found. I would not in any way be able to enjoy this as I am HIGHLY Allergic to Coconut. But it definitely looks like fun.

Vintage Easter Glory Cake

Maybe you want to go all out…If we had a bigger house and a dining room I would invite a houseful of people over and make a big spread like this…

retro Easter feast

I would wear my Easter Apron and cook all the fixins and goodies and even color eggs.

I don’t have an “Easter Apron” completed yet but here is the start of what I am working on  for my Easter Apron….

20130326_180241

I am going to add the finishing touches on it tomorrow, so I have it to wear on Easter!

I will share the pictures as soon as I get it done.

I think all of these  that I have made would be great Easter Aprons. I think it depends on the style of aprons you like and the desirability for cute, casual, or comfort. They are all comfortable to me, but I know some people feel better in jeans…

So the Jean Apron might be more of their style…

The Bandana Apron-Front

The Bandana Apron-Front

For some a quick easy little Bandana Apron like this one might be more their style. When I look at this bandana Apron I made I see a very Organic kinda girl. Someone Kitchy  and Quirky. This gal is making an Organic Easter meal.

The Turqoise Dotty-Front

The Turqoise Dotty-Front

The Turquoise Dotty-Back

The Turquoise Dotty-Back

Or perhaps the Turquoise Dotty is more your style. Cute quaint, I could see this gal in heels and pearls.

This Half Apron, lose knot tie in the back

(I either need to add more to it or just tie it in a knot. I didn’t add enough cloth for the tie)

Whatever your style, there is an apron for everyone…

Ok almost everyone…because…

My man says I need a MANS Apron because sometimes Men do the grillin for weekends and holidays and such. But the Man’s Apron needs to be sturdy and rugged, Have an apron string that has an opener on it for his beer , a towel hook for him to have his towel nearby and big apron pocket for anything else he needs. I teased  saying…

“And a cell phone or walkie holder for him to have his phone nearby so the woman can keep bugging him about all teh things on her Honey Do list, right?”

We both laughed and agreed.

Stay tuned tomorrow to see how my Easter Apron turned out and I might be able to toss in an another Recipe or two…
