Just Where Did “Black Friday” come from? TT Friday Special

Hey all my fabulous fashionistas!  Today is a great day for businesses.  BLACK FRIDAY!

Big or small, doors were open for retail business this morning.  Some as early as yesterday afternoon.  :OUCH:  The good part about online selling is that you have a chance to shop from the comfort of your home without fighting the crush of the busy Black Friday shoppers.  Want to shop right now?  Go Visit Trisha Trixie’s website for some truly awesome deals.

But I got all distracted.  Where did “Black Friday” come from?  Did you know that it has been around for quite some time…just not called “Black Friday” right away.

From www.blackfriday.com:

“The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. “Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Ever since the start of the modern Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been known as the unofficial start to a bustling holiday shopping season.

In the 1960’s, police in Philadelphia griped about the congested streets, clogged with motorists and pedestrians, calling it “Black Friday.” In a non-retail sense, it also describes a financial crisis of 1869: a stock market catastrophe set off by gold spectators who tried and failed to corner the gold market, causing the market to collapse and stocks to plummet.”

So, way back in 1924…the Friday after the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade…people began thronging to the stores in hope of getting a great deal on something either they wanted/needed or someone else wanted/needed.

Since then, the furor has grown, and through thick and thin, Black Friday has stood the test of time.

Until recently.

More and more over the last few years, Black Friday has become less spectacular in the eyes of many, myself included. Stores are rushing the season…starting mention of Black Friday at the beginning of November.  Even so much as taking over THANKSGIVING in their rush to making the almighty dollar!  What the heck?

I have always been of the opinion that Thanksgiving should be left as a day of rest, peace and enjoying family.  Not all service industries have the day off…imagine if Nurses, Doctors, Pharmacists, Police Officers and Firefighters took the day off?  Uh, yeah…not gonna happen.  I have never counted the Whipped Cream as a MUST HAVE…if I didn’t remember it until Thanksgiving Day.  You just went without.  Apparently, I am in the minority though…because most (not all, thank goodness!) Grocery Stores and Retail Shops are open on Thanksgiving at some point.  Sad, really…

A good portion of many people’s shopping nowadays is done online.  I can get fully behind shopping online…until Aunt Penny (fictitious name, of course), decides that you are still 18 and not 38…and sends you clothing way too small, inappropriate for you or…let’s face it, just isn’t for you.  Thankfully, if you contact retailers online and explain the problem, some will work with you…though most likely you will have to send back said item.  Which is okay…if you cannot really see the purpose of having a Barney 2T sweatshirt in your life…and need to get rid of it ASAP.

Usually, I just regift…or donate said item to the church.  If your aunt asks how you like it…”Oh, Aunt Penny…it was just way too small…so I gifted it to a kiddo that can use it.”  This will make you look good to Aunt Penny AND you really have likely helped out a kiddo in need.

Until next time, my beauties…In whatever you say or do, stay true to you.

Trisha Trixie Tuesday! Bespoke (Custom-Made-to-Order-MadetoMeasure)

What’s “Bespoke”?

Bespoke is an adjective for anything commissioned to a particular specification. “Custom-made”, “made to order”, “made to measure” and sometimes “hand-made” are near-synonyms.

The word bespoke is derived from the verb to bespeak, to “speak for something”, in the specialized meaning “to give order for it to be made” or commission, first cited from 1583 by the OED, with the adjective in its alternative form “bespoken” first quoted from 1607 in this sense.[1] The term is generally more prevalent in British English than American English, which tends to use “custom” instead, as in custom car, custom motorcycle etc.

So, with the bespoke items available from Trisha Trixie, you can create a customized items JUST FOR YOU! How do you do that?

GO HERE! Pick out the colors and fabric and Trisha Trixie will do the rest!

What do YOU think about being able to customize a product just for you? Do you like or dislike it?

Flylady Friday: For the Kids and Father’s day ideas

I have lots of friends with kiddos out of school for the summer.  I think that Flylady has some really unique ways to get the kids involved in clean up.  She sends out daily assignments for the kids and they are really fun.

June 13th challenge went as follows

Hi Kids!
Today I want you to open up the doors of your closet and check to see if you have any clothes that have fallen off of the hangers and havebecome jumbled up on the floor of the closet.Set a timer or ask a grown up to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much you can hang back up. If you can’t reach the rod to hang these things back up, ask a taller person to give you some hangers, you then hang the clothes on the hangers, and ask that tall person to help you hang them up. If you need to set the timer again, then do so for another 5 minutes. If you find some things that no longer fit or you do not use, put those in a bag and give them to Mom or Dad to bless someone else with.

Remember less stuff to clean and put away means more time to play.

Have fun!

I know that getting kiddos to clean is always a challenge, but we just have to find clever ways to make cleaning fun.  Timers and choices allow for lots of fun!

A friend of mine is a foster mother and her home is full of little boys.  Sometimes this can make her cleaning job more difficult.  So, she gives them a “helper” task.

The littlest one is three and she gives him a norwex microfiber cloth and lets him clean anything, but the TV that he chooses.  He loves being a helper and the norwex magic really does help her home stay clean.  There are no chemicals and he really can’t hurt a thing.  What could be better?  The walls became amazingly clean as this little guy got right to work.

Father’s Day

We at TrishaTrixie Designs have not forgotten dad.  Feel free to stop by our site to find lots of great ideas for dad.

Does dad like to clean?  My dad always enjoyed cleaning his car and making it shine.  Norwex has some fun products for dad.  The dust mitt works great for dusting of the inside of the car and the leather cleaner will do wonders for cleaning up leather seats in your car!

No matter what you decide we hope you have a Happy Father’s Day!

What not Wednesday: Schools Out Crafts about?

Make a Ball Float on Air - Image Collection

What is better than making a balloon float on air?  The directions are all included on the Spoonful website.

Does your child like to paint?  There are many canvas studios that offer children’s painting.  This is a fun way for your child to invent on a canvas.  A local business called Social Canvas offers this service, but check your local area for all the selections.

I saw some youngsters doing this and they seemed to really find a sense of accomplishment.  You will be amazed at how much it relaxes your child too!

Maybe you don’t have time to set up a huge crafting project, but the little ones need something to do.  Well, the DLTK’s website offers many printable coloring, crafting, and activities for you little ones to complete.  This site is well worth its weight in gold!

Try it Tuesday: Garden Party lighting

Gardening Party Light

light2

So, this is try it Tuesday and I look for other ideas to try.  I’m no designer like Trisha Trixie.  The directions were to stick some tissue paper in a jar, put on a lid, and a flameless candle and you would have a masterpiece.  If you couldn’t do it, they have them available on easy.  Psh…the directions were bad, but I can help you and I’ve added some beautiful additions.

Attire Suggestions

Trisha Trixie had come up with a reversible apron that is meant for keeping beauty supplies.  However, I think it will be great for holding crafting supplies.  Today, I introduce the cutest little barbie apron around.  Oh, this girl loves her some Barbies.  I’ll have to let you in on my Barbie collection some day!

Supply List Per garden light

  • A canning jar (I use the clear one from the craft store, just so as not to distract from my design)
  • A flameless candle
  • One sheet of tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • And something long to push your tissue around (I used a long handled lighter)

Directions

  1. Cut the tissue paper in half
  2. Measure around the jar and cut with a little room for overlap.
  3. Curl up the tissue and stick it in the jar.  Measure the depth of the jar.
  4. Pull out the tissue and cut so the tissue isn’t sticking out of the jar.light(1-4)
  5. Roll up the tissue slightly and put it inside the jar.
  6. Push the tissue around at the top and spread it out.  The edges of tissue should overlap a little.
  7. Use the long item to slightly push in the edges.
  8. Make the tissue even on all sides

Wednesday What not: The vintage mother

So with the wold of Mad Men blowing across our nation, what man doesn’t want his own Betty?

I’d love to be able to stay home and participate in the activities of the 1950s, but what did a stay at home mother really do?

Top Ten in the life of a 1950s mother

10. Taking care of the home.

9. Grocery Shopping

8. Crafting

7. Sewing

6. Baking

5. Socializing with friends

4. Volunteering through social clubs

3.  Taking care of children

2 Making sure the house stayed together.

1.  Staying beautiful for her husband!

What do you do that reminds you of the vintage mother?  Funny thing at my house we have a dishwasher, however I’d rather wash the dishes by hand.  Something about it just calms my nerves.

Also, I love to put on a little apron and imagine myself back in time.  Didn’t things seem so much simpler?

Perhaps, your mother deserves to feel like a goddess in her home while crafting, baking, sewing or whatever her heart desires.  Don’t forget that trishatrixie designs has a huge selection of aprons and apron accessories.

The bracelet cost me around $25 to make.  This may seem pricey, but it is no where near as expensive as the charm bracelets purchased at your local retailer.  If you search around, you can usually find deals on these bracelets.  Beads, charms and etc easily come off the bracelet making the charms changeable.  This would make a great, personal Mother’s Day Gift.

Friday Wrap Up: Golf and Summer in Review

Golf and Summer in Review

Let me just say that I really messed this summer thing up.  It is May 2nd and we have measurable amounts of snow here in Iowa.  We thought about packing our bags and heading to a beach, however were going to give Iowa another try at summer!

Saturday

Trisha Trixie talked to us about her childhood and growing up in the 70s.  She talked about music, the outdoors and just being overall happy.  You must read to find out the meaning of “don’t stir the ice cream!”

Sunday

We prepared beef kabobs ala summer fun!  This simple, fast recipe is great for busy weekends.

end

Monday

Mad Men had a focus on the shooting of MLK.  This made Trisha Trixie think about how this tragic event correlated with what occurred in Boston.  That is was okay and normal to feel the pain of those we have never met and question how something so horrible could ever happen.  “How are yousince it happened?”

Tuesday

We created a repurposed frame for the golf fanatic. This project could be done with any sport.  It is a fun twist on an old frame!

Wednesday

We looked at golf fashion throughout the ages.  It is fun to see how dress has evolved over the years to meet the needs of golfers.   Also, we had a date night in a jar to feature for May day!  Did you get any lovely May day surprises?

Thursday

We looked at the history of women and golf.  Analyzed the social elements of golfing.  If you golf, what do you gain from golfing?

Throwback Thursday: Women in Golf History Declared

Women in Golf

1800s

Mary Queen of Scots was a known golfer

Ladies attire was not known for flexibility on the range.

1811

The first known women’s golf tournament was held in Scotland at the Musselburg Golf Club.

1867

The first ladies golf course is formed, The Ladies Club of St. Andrew’s in Scotland

1894

A group of women from Morristown New Jersey Opened a seven hole golf club.  However, they made the mistake of allowing men and once one was elected president the club became a man’s only facility.

1904

The raisable skirt was introduced in golf; it had been popular with crochet players in the past.  The free stroke coat was introduced so women could freely use their arms.

1950s

The one piece dress made popular in the 50s was also popular on the golf range.  Women golfed for social interaction.  Shouldn’t women do more today, just to socialize beyond Facebook?

1960s

It was acceptable for women to wear short sleeves and bermuda shorts on the range.

Today

Women’s clubs are made about an inch shorter than men’s clubs due to the assumption that the women’s swing speed is slower than a mans.  This was not always the case. in the past, where the biggest difference might have been a girly club house.

These cute little slipcovers were found at Ladies Golf News.

Wednesday What Not: Golf Fashion and May Day Maddness

May Day Madness

So, we have all gotten the little cups with popcorn and M&Ms dropped at our door.  But we wanted to look for a more adult twist on this idea.  Through 504 Main, we located many gifts in a jar.  A featured item was a miniature golf date in a jar!

Mini+Golf+Date+In+A+Jar

I love this idea and I think you could really add your own spin to this gift giving idea.  Who might be deserving of such a May Day gift?

Golf Fashion Through the Years.

Golf has always been the place to be fashionable for women.  Having the right shoe and ensemble is just as important as how you play the game.

1894

The basic ensemble of the 1890s was a simple blouse and a long skirt about 3 inches off of the ground.  This sleeves often made a full swing difficult and the golf club often got caught up in the skirt.  Can you imagine?

The Twentieth Century

Women began to prefer the jacket, skirt, and blouse ensemble.  However, around 1909 the jacket was replaced with a cardigan.  This might have provided a bit more comfort.

1915

Finally, Jersey material was introduced.  The cardigan and the skirt were often made of jersey material.  This provided for more comfort.

1925

The golfing sweater vest became the latest rage.  This allowed for more movement in the swing.

Mid 1920s

The one piece golf dress was all the rage.  The skirts and sleeves were shorter.  I think this is a fun look.  Love those stockings!

1930s and 40s

Dresses modeled fashion trends.  The skirt did not get shorter and many stylish patterns were available.

1950s

It was common for women to where a blouse, skirt and often a cashmere sweater.  Golfing shoes were becoming a new fashion statement. Some women even wore nickers and blouses to the range.

Most women wear shorts, polos and cute golfing shoes on the range.  What would you prefer to wear?

My favorite look is the 40s.  It is classic.  Perhaps, we should plan a retro day at the range?  Trisha Trixie has been working away hard to make many golfing items.  Keep an eye on her site for more details!

This meal calls for the help of a super hero.  Wouldn’t your guy look fashionable in this apron?  Perhaps he is a fan of another character, well Trisha Trixie Designs is always happy to custom design for you.  Check out this apron at our Shop.

We, also, used something called firewire to create out kabobs.  These are not a requirement, but do make the job easier.

firewire

These can be found at many retailers near you.  They make marinating, organizing and cooking much easier.

One of these mitts or something similar will come in handy.  This particular one can be found on Amazon, but I’m sure you could locate one at many major retail stores.  I am thinking that Trisha Trixie designs could make this cooking accessory more individualized.  Wouldn’t that be a great Father’s day gift?

Needed Ingredients

1. A pound of sirloin

2. Pineapple rounds

3. Two green, red or yellow bell peppers

4. Whole mushrooms

5. A marinade of your choice (We used the Lawrys Teriyaki Marinade)

Directions

1. Cut meat, green peppers, pineapples into large chunk sizes (About an inch square)

2. Put meat, green peppers, pineapples and mushrooms on the firewire skewers or in a container if you don’t have the skewers.

3. Put marinade into the container (Add skewers and extra veggies) and let sit in refrigerator for 4 to 6 hours.

4.  Pull the skewers and veggies out of the refrigerator.

5.  On a small cookie sheet put foil.  Add the veggies to the foil.

6. Put the cookie sheet on the top shelf of your grill.  Throw the firewire or your own skewers onto the bottom of the grill.  If using the firewire, make sure that the metal hangs outside of the grill.  This allows the ends to be cool and makes taking the meat off the skewers an easier task.

7.  Let the skewers cook until the meat is to your liking.  We cooked for about 8 minutes, which is medium rare.

8.  Take them of the grill and remove items from the skewers!  You are ready to eat up.
