DIY: Scrubs: Brown Sugar Autumn Body Scrub

I love doing anything DIY if I can help it, especially if it will help save money in my pocket. Though I love Sephora, sometimes the things they sell can be a bit pricey when I could just make the item myself. For instance, I recently got a sample of a Brown Sugar Scrub and body wash. I thought “I could make this then I wouldn’t have to buy this!”

So I went searching around Google and Pinterest to see if I could find any DIY Brown Sugar Scrub but as I saw some Coffee scrubs, I thought “Wait, we use Rooibos loose tea, maybe I could incorporate this too!”

More searching only to find one or the other.

So…I made my own. Here’s how to make my Brown Sugar Autumn Body Scrub (I call it a Autumn Scrub because it smells more like Fall/Autumn time to me) :

Ingredients
  • 1 cup of sugar or Brown Sugar (We don’t eat sugar in our house, so I used Truvia Crystals and added Molasses to make Brown Sugar until I got the consistency I liked, then added it to this recipe you might need only 1/3 cup if using Truvia. I did one cup and had to add more)
  • **1 tbsp Loose Leaf Rooibos Tea (or more if desired) (If you only have tea bags, just cut open the tea bags for the amount you need/desire)(You can leave this step out if you don’t want it. The tea crystals are pretty messy in the shower, but not so bad in a bath, though beware of clogging your tub)
  • 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin E, (cut open vitamin 4-6 Vitamin E liquid gel caps)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or your favorite citrus essential oil (optional)
  • 1/3 cup liquid oil – either almond, avocado, olive, or coconut. I like Olive Oil best but we also use Almond Oil in our house so sometimes I mix them together so I get a bit of both.
  • If desired for dry skin, add a tbsp of Raw Honey
Instructions
  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine oil, vitamin E and vanilla. Add the brown sugar and mix well.
  2. Add your oil and mix together, it shouldn’t be to dry or two wet. If the mixture is dripping off your spoon, it’s too wet.
  3. Store in a container with a tight fitting lid and use whenever you feel the urge for a spa night!
  4. The above amount makes enough for your entire body, for a few washes.

This is how it should look with the tea leaves

To Use: In the shower, apply Brown Sugar Body Scrub into skin and rinse. Can be used daily.

**Trixie Tip: Please be aware that oils can make the shower and bath surfaces very slippery so remember to rinse well with hot water afterwards and wipe down so others (and yourself) do not fall. Also little rubber feet at the bottom of the shower or bath help you from sliding as well. If you don’t have that, I generally put a medium town down underneath me so I don’t fall.

The finished product (this is without the tea leaves)

Gift Packaging Idea: Though Mason Jars are GREAT for this, not everyone has them. Instead, save plastic containers from other products and replace the label with one I made myself on the computer. I use Washi Tape and fabric and a bow. Tie it up with a colorful ribbon and you have a wonderful homemade beauty gift!

enjoy!

Sunday Dinner: Seven Layer Taco Dip

Seven Layer Taco Dip

This week we are talking about all things outdoors.  When you are going to a picnic you need to have a quick, fun dish to bring along.  This is my handy dandy suggestion.

Attire Suggestion

Well, Trisha Trixie Designs are not just for the kitchen.  I’d like to recommend a few of her aprons that look like dresses.  Throw these over the top of your capris and see the smiles that will ensue.

  • 1 (16 ounce) can of refried beans
  • 1 (8 ounce) package of softened cream cheese.
  • 1 (16 ounce) container of sour cream
  • 1 (16 ounce) jar of salsa
  • 1 large tomato, chop it into small cube shapes
  • 1 green pepper chopped
  • 1 small head of lettuce shredded.
  • 1 (6 ounce) can of sliced black olives (Be sure to drain them)
  • 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the refried beans and taco seasoning meat. Take this mixture and put it on the bottom of your pan (I use one that is 9 x 9 but this is up to you)
  2. Mix the sour cream and cream cheese into a medium bowl.  Spread over your refried beans.
  3. Add a layer of salsa to the pan.
  4. Add a layer of tomatoes to the pan.
  5. Add a layer of green peppers to the pan
  6. Add a layer of lettuce to the pan.
  7. Top with Cheddar cheese and black olives.
  8. Put in the refrigerator and cover for 30 minutes or longer.
  9. Serve with chips

Tip: I have made these in individual serving cups for special occasions.  This lets everyone have a little cup to enjoy their dip from.

Happy socializing!

Saturday Special: Campfire Memories

Some of my greatest childhood memories are of sitting around the campfire.  Every summer my grandmother would load up the RV and we would drive to Little Wall Lake blaring Willie Nelson all the way.  This was a week long trip of camping.  My grandma was defiantly a nature lover.  She knew about survival and she was keen on sharing these ideas with myself and my cousin.  Starting a fire was an adventure with my grandmother, well everything was an adventure with my grandmother.

First: We would clean out the fire pit.  Some other campers usually had left it a mess.  We made sure the stones were in a  circular shape and that all the debris was removed.

Second: We would look for a big dead tree and cut it into logs.

One log is isolated on a white background Stock Photo - 9426755

Third: We would look for kindling. This is little dried branches and leaves.

Forth: We used sticks to build a little teepee shape
Fifth: We did not rub two sticks together.  However, we didn’t use a match either.  We did use a magnesium fire starter similar to one sold at Harbor freight.
And then we had a fire
campfire
You can always do a little BBQ on the grill.  TrishaTrixie is going to be selling lots of aprons for men at the upcoming comicon.  Wouldn’t BBQ be fun in one of these aprons?
Scooby Snack Makin' Apron $35

Scooby Snack Makin’ Apron $35

We use to read excerpts from scary stories by Roald Dahl  around the campfire.

“Now and again she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come. There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did. The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil. Her skin -for this was her sixth month with child-had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before. When the clock said ten minutes to five, she began to listen, and a few moments later, punctually as always, she heard the tires on the gravel outside, and the car door slamming, the footsteps passing the window, the key turning in the lock. She laid aside her sewing, stood up, and went forward to kiss him as he came in.” From Lamb to Slaughter

What did you enjoy doing around the camp fire?

Try It Tuesday: Ridding your home of those nasty gnats (by special guest Jessi Wilson)

Getting rid of Pesky gnats (Jessi Wilson)

Okay, so how many of you have woken up in the middle of the night to that annoying buzzing sound in your ear? Yep, me too. When spring comes those little gnats sneak their way in unnoticed and prey on you nearly 24/7 but mostly at night. I use to be a firm believer in fly strips until the day I backed into the one hanging in my dining room and got my hair stuck. And after many a “sentence enhancer” (cuss words for short) I decided, in desperate times I will use these.

Not anymore, I have found an at home safe and beyond effective method of getting those little gnats and fruit flies out of your life if not for good, pretty close, and you have all of these ingredients IN YOUR KITCHEN!

This is what you will need:

Wide mouth plastic bottle with tight fitting lid (Lipton Pure Life Tea bottles work great!!) or
Pint or Quart Mason jar with ring

Saran Wrap –if using the mason jar

Apple Cider Vinegar or Left Over Wine (WHAT!?! You say?!? Who has left over Wine? It happens, *laughs* I’m proof)

Dish Washing Soap (like for your sink, not dishwasher)

Water

Okay, these ingredients look pretty simple, right? This is where it gets even easier.

Method 1:
You are going to rinse out the contain you decide to use, shake it out so you get most of the water out of it, and measure out 1/4 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar or Wine(if you have that much left Emoji) and pour it into your container, add approximately 1 squirt (1 tablespoon) of your Dish Washing Soap. Now if you use the Mason Jar, you can take your little piece of Saran Wrap, put it over the top of your jar, and apply your lid and poke some holes in your wrap. You dont want them too big or too small, because you want these little buggers to get in, and not be able to get out, set it in the place your flies are gathering and… wait. (You may want to change this solution every couple days, where in method 2, I put put the lid back on shook it again, and started over)

Method 2: (Which is the one I used)
Put all ingredients from above into your Tea Bottle, when finished add 1/4 c of water and apply your lid. This is where your kids can help, have them shake the bottle until you have bubbles forming to the top of your bottle. Remove your lid, set it in place, and wait. The cool part about this method, is you can see these little bugs gather on the bubbles, and it traps them so they can fly in, but not out. Genius, Right?!

gnatkiller

Good Luck with your options, I would really recommend this over any other product out there. But ill let you decide for yourself. — Jessi

Make a Ball Float on Air - Image Collection

What is better than making a balloon float on air?  The directions are all included on the Spoonful website.

Does your child like to paint?  There are many canvas studios that offer children’s painting.  This is a fun way for your child to invent on a canvas.  A local business called Social Canvas offers this service, but check your local area for all the selections.

I saw some youngsters doing this and they seemed to really find a sense of accomplishment.  You will be amazed at how much it relaxes your child too!

Maybe you don’t have time to set up a huge crafting project, but the little ones need something to do.  Well, the DLTK’s website offers many printable coloring, crafting, and activities for you little ones to complete.  This site is well worth its weight in gold!

Sunday night dinner: Milk Fed Turnips

Milk Fed Turnips

Basic Ingredients:
3 Large Turnips: Peeled and cut into 1″ cubes
3 1/2 Cups Milk
1 Stick Butter

turn1

So, this is a great recipe because you can infinitely vary it to your
hearts content. Turnips have such a flat flavor that you can make
it taste any way you want with the addition of spices. This dish can
be any part of a meal, from a main course to dessert, the only limit
is your imagination.

turn2

So, take your turnips and put them in a medium size pan and add the
milk. You can add seasonings now, for our meal I’m adding Thyme.
Heat it all up to simmering, slowly and while stirring often or you
will burn the milk into the pan, which is no fun to clean.

turn3

While this is cooking cut up your butter into small pieces unless
it is already soft.

Simmer 20 minutes or until the turnips are easily pierced by a fork.
Once they reach that stage, drain them, keeping the liquid and remove
any stems or debris from your seasoning, if your using fresh like I
was. Put the turnips into either a large bowl for hand mashing, or
your favorite kitchen appliance to be puree’d.

Mash or puree the turnips to the consistency of stiff mashed potatoes
and then add in the butter and any other seasoning you may want. I
put in two crushed cloves of garlic at this point, we were having
these with pork chops and they went perfectly. Mix all that together
and you are almost done, if you want to be.

turn4

Now, this is the beginning consistency. You can leave it like this,
but if your going for more of a stew consistency you can also add up
to 2 cups of the reserved cooking liquid back in and continue to
puree or mash until you get the consistency your looking for. I
suggest you go slow the first time, until you know what you want.

That’s it, enjoy.

Saturday Special: Gardening in a vintage way

Gardening in a Vintage way

I take many of my gardening ideas from my grandmother.  When I dig in the dirt, I still hear her voice.  I guess the garden is the place that I go to be near her.  I am thankful for all that she has taught me and hope that I might be able to share her passion with you.  I don’t guarantee results, but this is the way we have always done it!

First of all, you can garden any place.  I started pot gardening in my first apartment.

get-attachment-11.aspx
This is a tomato plant and it already has yellow flowers and a tiny tomato.  All signs that this is a healthy plant.
Second, gardening has to be fun.  Wear cute cloves and a pretty apron!  If you are going to do it, do it in style.  Find many cute items now available at our etsy shop!
sunflower pink-gloves
Now, you’ll want to keep the critters out.  My grandma never used harsh chemicals and neither do I.  I like to pull weeds, but I do use organic preen.  Also, to keep out the bunnies and other varmints I plant green onions and Zinnias.  I never eat the onions and they come back year after year on there own.
get-attachment-17.aspx
When we plant lettuce, we dig a small trowel and place the seeds inside.  After the seeds go in, we brush the dirt over the seeds.  Use plenty, some will wash away!
get-attachment-13.aspx
Beans are fun to plant.  It always makes me think of jack and the bean stalk.  It is truly amazing that little beans become plants.  We dig little holes and then fill them in.
We, usually, plant two rows of beans.  The idea of planting three is the hope that one bean will make it to maturity.
Our garden also has peppers, pumpkins and a few herbs.  What do you like in your garden?  Have other helpful gardening trick or tips?  We’d love to hear them.

Wednesday What Not: Birthday Traditions

We are celebrating the birthday week of TrishaTrixie.

I thought it would be fun to reflect on some birthday traditions.

Cake

cake

There are many theories as to why we have the birthday cake!

  • The greeks were thought to take cakes to the gods at the beginning of a full moon and a birthday represents one full moon!
  • In Germany, it was a tradition to make bread in the shape of the baby Jesus’s swaddling clothes.

But why do they put candles on the cake?

  • Again, this looks at ancient Greek times.  When the cakes were brought to the God’s they were lit with candles to look like the moon.
  • The German’s were the first to use small candles on their cakes, as they were good candle makers.
  • Candles were used in the center of cakes to represent the “light of life”
  • Some cultures believed that the smoke from the candles would send your wishes up to heaven.

The Birthday Party

A party is usually had so that treats can be shared and presents can be given.  However, this was not always the case.

  • The earliest parties were planned because people thought that evil spirits would visit them on their birthdays.  Friends and family stuck close so they could keep the spirits away.
  • Later, they became traditions where people would come together and celebrate the life of the person having a birthday.

Birthday Luck

A good luck birthstone, good luck flower and good luck color have been assigned to each month of the year.

Wrapping Gifts

A tradition that we hold is the custom of wrapping gifts.

Check out this video on how to wrap a perfect gift.

FlyLady Fridays: Getting started on the declutter

How many times do you open a closet, a drawer or a back room and say, “I need to reorganize?”  Well, it happens to me almost daily

I’ve had girlfriends ask me for help, because they think I must be organized because my house looks neat and put together, but I don’t let them into the closets!

Does your junk drawer look like this?

I’m going to begin to try to fix these messes in my home and the first suggestion from the FlyLady is to join her email.  So, I’d recommend that you do the same.  I’m going to read the newsletters and continue to highlight suggestions on how to implement some “baby steps” to organize myself.

To begin with I thought it would be good to start with the

FlyLady’s 11 Commandments

1. Keep your sink shiny and clean

2. Get dressed every morning, even if you don’t feel like it. Don’t forget your lace-up shoes.  Don’t forget your Trishatrixie designs!

mother'sday

3. Do your morning and before-bedtime routine everyday.

4. Don’t allow yourself to be sidetracked by the computer.

5. Pick up after yourself. If you get it out, put it away.

(So you don’t end up looking overwhelmed)

6. Don’t try to do two projects at once. ONE JOB AT A TIME.

7. Don’t pull out more than you can put back in one hour.

8. Do something for yourself everyday, maybe every morning and night.
9. Work as fast as you can to get the job done. This will give you more time to play later.
10.  Smile even when you don’t feel like it. It is contagious. Make your mind up to be happy, and you will be.
11. Don’t forget to laugh everyday. Pamper yourself; you deserve it!
Check back for more helpful hints. I’ll include my trials and you might even get to see my messy closet!  Have a great weekend.

Saturday (Evening) Special-Vintage Sewing Books

I love Vintage sewing books such as these. There not only is something wonderful to me about the smell of old books, but looking at these brings backs moment of when my Grandma Hunter was trying so hard to teach me the basics. I also love the style of these books and how they teach us. There is no fancy DVD or CD with some tutorial on it. All they had was words. Words and images in and on a book to tell us everything we needed to know about how to sew. I got one of the books at a Thrift store and the other one I happened upon when I was at Domestica in East Village in Des Moines.

If you get a chance to grab one of these types books, do yourself a favor and get it. It is well worth it and you won’t regret it.

Now, I am going off to my rocking chair and ottoman and gonna put my feet up and devour into these tonight and get off this new version of a Idiot box- the computer. 🙂

Friday Wrap Up: Golf and Summer in Review

Golf and Summer in Review

Let me just say that I really messed this summer thing up.  It is May 2nd and we have measurable amounts of snow here in Iowa.  We thought about packing our bags and heading to a beach, however were going to give Iowa another try at summer!

Saturday

Trisha Trixie talked to us about her childhood and growing up in the 70s.  She talked about music, the outdoors and just being overall happy.  You must read to find out the meaning of “don’t stir the ice cream!”

Sunday

We prepared beef kabobs ala summer fun!  This simple, fast recipe is great for busy weekends.

end

Monday

Mad Men had a focus on the shooting of MLK.  This made Trisha Trixie think about how this tragic event correlated with what occurred in Boston.  That is was okay and normal to feel the pain of those we have never met and question how something so horrible could ever happen.  “How are yousince it happened?”

Tuesday

We created a repurposed frame for the golf fanatic. This project could be done with any sport.  It is a fun twist on an old frame!

finished

Wednesday

We looked at golf fashion throughout the ages.  It is fun to see how dress has evolved over the years to meet the needs of golfers.   Also, we had a date night in a jar to feature for May day!  Did you get any lovely May day surprises?

Mini+Golf+Date+In+A+Jar

Thursday

We looked at the history of women and golf.  Analyzed the social elements of golfing.  If you golf, what do you gain from golfing?

modernpris1925shay

We have had a wonderful week here at Trisha Trixie design. We are working to keep our Store up to date.  Keep checking back for fun ideas that may inspire your own creative passions!

Wednesday What not: Tips and tricks for great summer skin

Wednesday What Not: Tips and Tricks for the skin

Tomato

I see you questioning now.  Tomatoes are great for the skin.  Have dark spots or blemishes?  Cut up a tomato, rub it on your skin, let it dry and then rub it off.  You will be amazed at the results!

Watermelon

Watermelon is good for your blemishes, so eat up plenty of this health fruit.  However, if a blemish has surfaced rub a piece on your face and let it dry.  You rinse of the watermelon and the blemish will begin to go down in size.

Coconut Water

It is all the rage and does some amazing stuff for your skin and hair.  Drink it up for the best results.  It will make your skin glow and your hair soft and smooth.  One interesting thing about coconut water is that when you drink it, it cools you from the inside out.  This will help you stay cooler on those hot July days!

Buttermilk Bath

In the summer, my skin gets dry from the summer heat.  Nothing is better than mixing a cup of buttermilk into your bath.  You will feel the difference immediately and what girl doesn’t enjoy a relaxing bath?

Keeping skin Healthy

Don’t forget that you should try to protect your face.  The skin here is sensitive and the most noticeable area for wrinkles to appear.  Try a fun beach hat.

This hat is $14.99 at Target and well worth the cash, if you ask me!

Also, coverups are nice to keep your skin sun free and help transition into lunch on the beach!

This too is available at Target, but many options are available to you.

Please! Please!  Do not forget your sunscreen.  There is no need to damage the skin.

Of course, do not forget your fun flare at the beach.  Trisha Trixie designs has nautical earrings, shoes, scarves and other flare to build up your ensemble.  Thinking of having a picnic on the beach Trisha Trixie would love to custom design an apron to match your suit!

Try it Tuesday: Get Fascinated with Fascinators

Do you like those amazing Fascinators, Floral clips and Barrettes you see all the Pin Up Models and other Beauties wear? Well, I did my best to put together a little video for you on how to do just that!

Check it out and take a look at a few at our slideshow of Fascinators at the end to see the final result!

Then comment on what you thought of the video. I love feedback so I can make it better next time!

This is the Apron I wore in this video. I have yet to name this one as it was my FIRST Apron. I did do it for a Brave Girls Challenge but I just haven’t figured out what to name it yet. Have any suggestions? Let me know!!

So what did you think?

What else do you want to learn How To make? (I can’t give away ALL my secrets, but I can share a few)

Until next time,
