Trixie Tuesdays: How to Make an Ice Cube Necklace

With the heat soaring into and past the 90’s and 100’s I thought this fun little how to for an ice cube necklace might be a nice how to everyone of all ages might enjoy. It also isn’t a bad conversation starter or a great way to wow your pals.

Let’s start out by stating we are not talking about the singer Ice cube.

We are talking about the cubes that come out of your freezer.

Items you will need:

  • A necklace length piece of string
  • A glass of ice
  • Salt
  • Tablecloth or placemat

How to:

Remove four or five cubes from the glass.

Put them close together on tablecloth or placemat

Wet the string by dipping it into your glass and lay it across the cubes

Sprinkle the salt liberally all over the cubes and string.

Wait ten seconds or so then lift the string by its ends and tada the ice cubes will hang from it.

Ask a willing pal or put it on your own neck to COOL IT! 🙂

So why does this trick work? Water freezes at 32 degrees but when you sprinkle salt on them, it lowers the freezing point and then the ice melts. The melting water washes away some of the salt, the water freezes and the salt binds them.

This is a kewl trick but unless you walk around with a string in your purse it’s not so impromptu. The book says it can be done with a long shoe lace from a mans shoe. What they don’t say is you get the man to give you his show lace and then I was wondering, would you really want it?

Enjoy your way to cool down with this kewl tip.

Until next time,

Xoxo Trisha Trixie
