Nautical Bottle Top Shoes DIY

shoes1

This project was super fun and easy and I ended up with a delightful pair of new shoes!  I picked a nautical theme, but any idea will do ya!

We are going to be working with Modge Podge, so we have to dress for this project!

Attire Suggestions

turqueza polkadot

The Turqueza Polka-dot half apron by TrishaTrixie Designs reminds me of the ocean on a summer evening, don’t you think?

Turqueza paisley

Of course, if you can feel the ocean breeze you might desire a Turquza paisley by TrishaTrixie Designs to tie your ensemble together.

Titanic Traveler

The Titanic travel will add a hint of nautical wonder to your look.  TrishaTrixie Designs has many other nautical jewelry available at their shop!

Shoes you say?  We will have that covered in a bit.

Needed Items

  • Two bottle tops (I purchased a bag from the craft store as they lay flat on the shoes)
  • Modge Podge
  • 1 inch circle cutter (or you can create your own pattern)
  • Glue gun and hot glue
  • Images to put in the bottle tops
  • A pair of shoes to dazzle up.

Steps to create a Nautical shoe sensation

  1. Find images online and copy them into a word document.  Make them small enough that you will be able to create a 1 inch circle from the image.

1 inch

2. Use a circle cutter or create a 1 inch circle pattern and cut out your images.

3. Use the mod podge to lightly secure the images into the bottle caps.

4. Take the Mod Podge and fill in the top of the bottle cap

5.  Wait three hours for the Mod Podge to dry.

6.  Hot glue your bottle caps on the shoes (These shoes I purchased at Target for $5.95.  You can buy flats for a steal and glam them up!)

7.  Wear them with pride!  You made your own flare.

Saturday Special : Fascinators

First off sorry for the delay in this post. Sometimes, as a real person, life gets away from us ya know?

Anyway, As promised I wanted to share and talk to you about Fascinators and show you different styles, shapes and trends as well as the different types of Fascinators out there.  I already did a small video for you back on Try it Tuesday if you want to go view that. (Warning the video isn’t super great but I will get better as I go along)

A fascinator is a headpiece, a style of millinery. The word originally referred to a fine, lacy head covering akin to a shawl and made from wool or lace, but mostly feathers. In the modern usage, it refers to a woman’s alternative to hat for formal attire; it is usually a large hair decoration on a band or clip with elaborate trimmings and decoration like a formal hat and it can incorporate a base to make it a miniature hat.

A substantial fascinator is a fascinator of some size or bulk

Bigger than a barrette, modern fascinators are commonly made with feathers, flowers or beads.[1] They need to be attached to the hair by a comb, headband or clip. The fun, fanciful ornament is often embellished with crystals, beads, or loops of ribbon, and attaches via a comb or headband; some have a small, stiff, flat base that can be secured with bobby pins.

(all info from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascinator )

Here are some Fascinators I have worn in some of my photo shoots or for/at events

Throwback Thursday; Bullying of yesterday and today

Past Images of Bullying

A bully use to be a different sort of thing.  In the 1950s, you would get your buddies together and face a bully head on.  May the toughest man win!  These are the images of past bullies.

EddieHaskell-300x227-1

(Eddie Haskell from Leave it To Beaver was a clean cut kid that everyone wanted their children to be like, but he had a mean side that the weaker kids would come to know)

ScottFarkus-1

(Scott Farkus was the mean bully from the movie A Christmas Story)

Remember the scene where the bully chases the other kid home and the kid slams the door just in time?  Did you know these doors no longer keep bullies out?

Why is Bullying worse today, than it was in the 1950s?

Well, I surely do not have all the answers.  However, I can make some assumptions.  Children use to be able to go home and get away from their peers.  “Cyber bullying” has changed this for many.

  • People can attack others by setting up fake accounts and have the ability to remain anonymous.
  • Our children spend large amounts of time on cell phones, computers and other electronic devices.  These devices can be used to spread hurtful information about others in a very quick manner.
  • Once something is online and public, it is hard to get rid of.  This could lead people to thinking it will always be public information and this can sometimes lead to deadly results.
  • It is much easier to be mean through an electronic device, than when you are looking into the face of your victim.

Are our children more sensitive?  Perhaps, they are.  However, it is different for one child to call you fat than to have 353 people like a status saying you are fat.  Something about hate from masses might be harder to take.

This video was created to help stop bullying.  School bullying prevention programs have been shown to be successful.

What should you do if you know bullying is occurring?

My mother would have marched right over to the neighbors house and let them know that their child was a disrespectful brat!  You may even feel like the woman pictured below.

angrymom

However, as we have new problems we should have new methods to solve these problems.

This information comes from stopbullying.gov a good resource to learn more about bullying.

Do:

  • Intervene immediately. It is ok to get another adult to help.
  • Separate the kids involved.
  • Make sure everyone is safe.
  • Meet any immediate medical or mental health needs. (Ask, “Are you Okay.”)
  • Stay calm. Reassure the kids involved, including bystanders.
  • Model respectful behavior when you intervene.

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Don’t ignore it. Don’t think kids can work it out without adult help.
  • Don’t immediately try to sort out the facts.
  • Don’t force other kids to say publicly what they saw.
  • Don’t question the children involved in front of other kids.
  • Don’t talk to the kids involved together, only separately.
  • Don’t make the kids involved apologize or patch up relations on the spot

Apologies and fact sorting can happen once the problem is diffused.  Getting the help of a guidance counselor and the parents involved are the best bet.

Wednesday What Not: the skinny on bullying

 Bullying now and then.

What is the difference?  Have you ever stopped to wonder why we as are so much harsher on each other than ever before.  How the older generation doesn’t understand bullying?  I’ve heard my mother as well as others say, “Everyone gets picked on in school.”  Bullying goes further than what they know.

Bullying Defined

So what is bullying?  I found a great site that provides information regarding bullying from stopbullying.gov I recommend that you check out this site for information on how to deal with bullying.

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.

In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:

  • An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
  • Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.

Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

Overtime, bullying can cause serious emotional problems.

The Vintage Female Image

My mother’s childhood were filled with several types of beautiful women like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.  It was acceptable for women to have all shapes of bodies and they were all beautiful.

Pepsi Cola Ads, 1950s (2)                   1950smodels
pennies-7
Not only do these women have different shapes and sizes, but they are doing something; laughing with their girlfriends, gardening and being ogled by a child.  The event in life was more valued than the look.  Don’t get me wrong, these women were beautiful.  However, women of the 50s were valued for their abilities; cooking, cleaning, gardening, crafting, socializing and many other abilities.  What are women valued for today?

The Modern Female Image

What are our young ladies valued for today?  Sex, drugs or money?  I’m not really sure what we are teaching them.  However, these images can only hurt them.

Ralph-Lauren-Photo

What are we valuing here?  I’m not really sure.  I guess this is why I hold on to the values of the 50s.  I can never be one of these girls.  My body wasn’t built this way.  I don’t want sunken eyes or to appear soulless.

It took me years to realize that I would never be a size 2.  That it was okay to be myself.  That there are things worth valuing in myself and other women, beyond looks.   Help your friends, daughters, neighbors and all girls find their worth!

At Trisha Trixie Designs we want girls to find their inner talents.  To showcase them with their own beauty.  With that, I’ll will leave you with pictures of some real women.  You are all beautiful!
